Methylphenidate (Ritalin)

    • A 7-year-old boy is brought in by his mother due to his poor performance in school. She learned from his teachers that he will often yell out answers in class, will not wait in line, has trouble making friends, and obeying the rules of games. The mother states that she is, "burnt out" and has trouble taking care of him at home. On exam, you see a very active young child who during the exam grabs your ID badge and your stethoscope several times. Otherwise, his exam is within normal limits.

        • analagous to action of amphetamines
        • can also serve as a reuptake inhibitor
      • mechanism for relieving symptoms of ADHD is unknown
