A 23-year-old woman presents to the emergency department for vomiting and abdominal pain. She has been unable to eat or drink for the past 24 hours without vomiting. She also complains of worsening abdominal pain that started 3 days ago. The patient has a medical history of IV drug abuse and alcohol abuse. She is not on any current medications. Her temperature is 99.5°F (37.5°C), blood pressure is 127/68 mmHg, pulse is 120/min, respirations are 17/min, and oxygen saturation is 98% on room air.
