According to the most recent recommendations from the American Academy of Dermatology, sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure.

Current recommendations indicate that people of all skin types should be using sunscreen for skin cancer protection throughout the year. Sun should be avoided during the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, as this is the time when the UV rays are the strongest. The first line of protection are physical barriers such as long sleeved shirts, pants, or large brimmed hats. Sunscreen should be used in all uncovered areas. Extra care should be taken when near water or snow, as the sun's rays are reflected in these environments.

Bouknight and Kovach discuss the ability of sunscreen to prevent skin cancer in their review. Evidence indicates that daily sunscreen use will decrease the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma, but not basal cell. There is currently no consistent evidence regarding sunscreen's ability to prevent melanoma.

Quatrano and Dinulos discuss the mechanism of sunscreens in their review. There are both physical and chemical sunscreens. The most common physical sunscreens contain agents like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide which physically reflect the sun's rays conferring both UVA and UVB protection. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and dissipate the energy as light or heat.
