[Blocked from Release] Benign Rolandic Epilepsy

  • Snapshot
    • A 7-year-old boy wakes up in the middle of the night with the right side of his face twitching and with speech arrest. He is able to get up and run to his parents room. The symptoms reside after one minute. EEG is normal except for prominant spike that emerges of the left central area during sleep.
  • Introduction
    • Benign partial epilepsy of childhood
    • Occurs in school aged children
    • Emerges during sleeping or drowsiness
  • Presentation
    • Focal manifestations, like right-sided facial twitching
    • No LOC or significant mental status change
  • Evaluation
    • EEG normal except for prominant spike that emerges of the left central area during sleep
  • Treatment
    • Any anticonvulsant is effective at managing the seizures
    • If the events are isolated, it may be legitimate to follow
  • Prognosis, Prevention, and Comlications
    • It is a benign condition that is usually outgrown
